Designed for film students, cinephiles and aspiring screenwriters and directors, the Goethe-Institut Pakistan will be providing the venue for a Film Appreciation Workshop with highly acclaimed independent filmmaker Sabiha Sumar.
Her track record is remarkable. Her very first documentary, aired on major TV networks internationally, received the Golden Gate Award at the San Francisco Film Festival. Her first feature film before that, ‘Silent Waters’, won 17 different international awards, including the Golden Leopard Award at the Locarno International Film Festival. ‘Dinner with the President – a Nations Journey’ was another revealing documentary with positive critical reception, featured on over 200 television stations.
Her efforts to boost the film industry in Pakistan and catalyse societal change through the medium are well documented. She has directed a number of drama series as well as talk shows with local celebrities, and also produced the Oscar winning short documentary ‘Saving Face’. Her films capture the landscape of socio-political strife in Pakistan, touching on subjects of rampant religious fundamentalism and the shocking women’s rights issues still prevalent in our country.
Her Film Appreciation Workshop will be conducted in a lecture format – with a screening of mostly German films with subtitles. The goal is to help workshop attendees develop the skill-sets and eye for critical analysis of films and cinematic language, in order to begin to truly understand films as powerful tools of communication.
The workshop will help participants understand the direct consequences and limitations of creative choices in a developing project, and will go through a number of fundamental concepts. Among other things, you will learn to reconstruct a scene to change its meaning, figure out the qualities that identify different genres, and incorporate filming strategies and techniques dealing with light, sound and cameras.
