Japanese botanist and expert in plant ecology, Akira Miyawaki extensively studied the natural forests of the world, specialising in the restoration of natural vegetation on land that has degraded as a result of human-induced processes.
The Miyaki Method of afforestation focuses on planting different types of trees in close proximity in a pit. This process enriches the land and leads to a vibrant co-existence of plants.
Founded in 2015, The Urban Forest is a dedicated community organisation aiming to create a number of fast growing, small urban forests all around the city.
Their social media page posts information and facts regarding the sustainability crisis throughout the country, while they promote their initiative of planting trees wherever possible.
Their ultimate goal is to restore the native forests of Karachi. They do so through collaborations with eco-friendly companies and plantation drives with university groups and other community members.
They’ve conducted workshops to educate the community on how to plant individuals trees, sharing their expertise on soil conditions, potential natural vegetation (PNV), ‘biomass quantification’ and other core concepts of the Miyawaki method, from the plantation to the maintenance.
