The conflicts between our various desires can complicate life: contradicting interests can’t always share the same space in reality. And yet, the pursuit of belonging – in our community or in our own skin – must continue.
Karachi-Based illustrator and ‘chronic doodler’ Asma Javeri has been through her own dilemmas in choosing between separate, almost mutually exclusive career paths – the scientific pursuit of medicine and the expression of art. She hasn’t ‘settled’ for either.
This Wednesday’s Art Exhibition in the Faraar Gallery of The Second Floor (T2F) will showcase Asma’s intimate illustrations, inspired by her own efforts to navigate between an enthusiasm for medicine and an ultimate passion for art. Her creations are a lasting tribute to the encapsulating city of those decisions – our home of Karachi.
Iconic landmarks in the city serve as the symbols of important memories for her, and are the foundations of this illustration series: she fuses the natural forms of our human body and anatomy with the shifting shapes of Karachi’s vast city, fulfilling her love for both disciplines through this unique personal project. Her exhibition pays homage to Karachi while exploring the intersection of medicine and art.
The Faraar Gallery is an important platform of emerging talent, and we can all support initiatives of creative expression by participating in T2F events and exhibitions like this.
