Sunday Matinée – “Talking Money” by Sebastian Winkels
It is such a welcomed development at Karachi’s historically famous Capri Cinemas that aside from commerical films, the cinema has expanded its showtimes to include critically acclaimed art movies, as part of its “Sunday Matinee” series.
This Sunday, on November 17, Capri cinema in association with Goethe-Institut Pakistan is showing the film “Talking Money”.
Talking Money is an observational documentary movie, where cameras stationed at consultation tables all over the world, show how social transactions are made. Weaving stories from eight countries into one global money conversation, it virtually transforms the cinema into a bank.
Intimate conversations in an impersonal place: from Bolivia to Pakistan, Benin to Switzerland, men and women sit down across from their neighborhood bankers to discuss the intimacies of their financial lives. Far from the glamour of distant Wall Street, this is the reality of personal banking, where one’s life problems are a matter of business.
A very intriguing excerpt from the film’s officially released synopsis reads, “In fifteen spontaneously recorded encounters, the bank table turns into a stage for confessions and masquerades, where consultants and clients try their best to look solid and trustworthy. Filming entirely from the bank’s side of the table, Sebastian Winkels offers the audience a place in a bizarre power play, exploring a complicated relation called ’money’”.
With this multi-voiced saga of work and muscle of capitalism, banks and market, you will get to know how the invisible power of money works on all of us, no matter who and where we are.
Now that you are hooked, also note that you will not only watch this film, but will go back home having your queries answered and your comments heard as a follow up question and answer session with the crew and director of the film will allow the audience to directly interact with the makers and get to know the theories. confusion, behind the scenes tid bits and more!
