Written by: Javeria Akbar
Children Literature Festival (CLF) managed by Idara e Taleem o Agahi (ITA) is all set to bring an incredible evening studded with devotional and soulful music for the Qawwali and Sufi music admirers of Karachi. The event “Story of Qawwali” is all about delving in to the origins and practice of Qawwali. The event includes informative lectures and demonstrations as well as compelling Qawwali performances in an intimate setting by one of Pakistan’s most famous Qawwals, Ghayoor Moiz Mustafa Qawwal and party. The event in all its grace is organized in the heart of the city at the Pearl Continental hotel.
For the lecture and demonstrations sessions, Children Literature Festival (CLF) organizers have invited one of the most well-known writers, public speakers and cultural commentators of the era, Ally Adnan. With over a decade of detailed study in the Qawaali discipline, he is considered a maestro with comprehensive knowledge about the origin, history and traditions of the said subject matter. He also conducts workshops on a range of art subjects – from painting, to Hindustani Sangeet to Kathak dance, Urdu poetry and much more. His prolific work and intellect has been celebrated internationally.
To complete the grandeur of the evening, Ghayoor Moiz Mustafa Qawwal and ensemble will lit the mehfil up with their spellbinding mystic music consisting of some mellow and up beat renditions. Hailing from the eminent Qawwal Gharana of Fareed Ayaz and Abu Muhammad, the Qawaali maestros are the torchbearers of Khusro’s tradition and are known for the authenticity of their musical tradition, a huge repertoire of ancient Qawwalis and an extensive knowledge of Raag (musical modes) and Taal (rhythm). Their unique, distinct style is the heritage of over eight hundred years, intact in its most original version.
Children Literature Festival, unlike its other fund raisers, is bringing something really classic this year under the slogan of “The story of Qawwali”. Don’t forget that like all other fund raising events, the revenue collected by this event will be reinvested into the education and learning of underprivileged children. Do join CLF in their fundraiser event on 14th of June at Pearl Continental Karachi at seven in the evening followed by a lavish dinner by 9 O’ Clock. For more details, please click here.
