Cop in my city – Future leaders, let’s discuss, debate and propose for the climate!
Climate Change knows no borders, and is a crisis bound to affect the entire global village that we live in. That is why in 1992, during the Rio Earth Summit, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was established. This convention between parties (states), set forth a number of rules and objectives to curb climate change. One of which, was the decision to organize conferences every year gathering all parties to engage in dialogue and to formulate solutions. These conferences are called Conferences of Parties (or COPs).
Based on this model, Institute of Business Administration, in collaboration with Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom Pakistan and the Ministry of Climate Change, is organizing a two-day immersive Climate Change conference, COP in MyCity. COP in MyCity is hence a youth-led project which ambitions to bridge the gap between climate negotiations (a.k.a. the COPs: Conferences Of the Parties) and youth in order to inspire local climate actions in all cities of the world.
The conference, a simulation the CoP, is aimed to train future experts on climate change issues on how they can play a role in the various international fora dealing with climate change issues. It is a platform for youth to voice their opinions regarding prevailing climatic issues and come up with solutions to various complications related to the environment and the world around us. Hence, the exercise will help changemakers to equip the participants with diplomatic skills to address Pakistan’s positions regarding climate change and, above that, develop a better understanding of diplomatic processes in the wide web of United Nations institutions.
Climate change impacts everyone. But it is the poorest of society who face the worst brunt of the destructive power. The organizers are frontrunning names in national climate action activism and are known for pursuing the objectives by targeting the core issues – through education, dialogue and consultation. Come and voice your concerns regarding climate change. Debate your way through various lobbies and come up with policies to provide a solution to this global crisis. With so much to gain and nothing to lose, what are you waiting for?
The conference set for 5th and 6th October, 2019 from 9 AM to 5 PM at the IBA main campus. Come one and come all, for climate change is a concern that should trouble every single on of us.
