With the impressive surge of theatre throughout the city, there are a number of opportunities for citizens to plan visits to areas like the National Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA), PACC, and Arts Council to witness high level performances from local stars in the making. The progress and traction that Karachi's performing arts have gained is laudable in respect to previous years - but perspective is necessary. There is a lot of work ahead of us to include underserved communities in the current wave of creative endeavour and opportunism.
Thespianz’s organization and their social theatre play, “Saba – Dreams matter”, are proving to be one of the game changers on this turf. In association with United Nations Development Program and Sustainability Agents, a street theatre campaign has been launched with the aim of empowering women from underprivileged areas of the city. This is strategized by performance of street plays and then follow-up info sessions to sensitize guardians to encourage and support their women. These performances also advocate the acquisition of professional jobs and the necessity of engaging in skills and development trainings. The play is directed by Faisal Malik & written by Nouman Mehmood.
The street theatre campaign will show 11 performances in various street spots of Korangi, every weekend on Sundays, till the 10th of November, 2019. The first show opened on 25th August, 2019, with great attendance and press conference was also organized following the performance.
The organizers have been performing many similar social awareness theatres in the past, many of whom have met a resounding success. “Ghar Mastiyan” (Anti Domestic violence initiative), “Dhuwaan” (Anti Drugs Awareness) and “Jama Poonji” (Saving and investments awareness) are just some of the many great plays produced.
