Salt Soiree 32 and the South Asian Ensemble

If you belong to South Asia, you are aware that the arrival of monsoon season has always been greeted in this part of the world and with a deep impact on art, literature and music. A unique bond of music and this rainy season brings delight (among other emotions) to our mind, heart and soul.

Salt Arts has contributed to this musical literature in its own unique manner. It was in 2016 when on a rainy monsoon afternoon, while sipping on hot cups of chai, the co-heads of Salt Arts sat together and planned to form an ensemble of South Asian sounds, with the collective musical talent and memory of the team and its collaborations. Soon on August 2016, the first production of the ensemble was launched, named “One Love Southasia”.

Since then, the ensemble has been evolving each year in its better shape, and has performed a number of times as part of their Salt Soiree series in the city of Karachi (a city that Salt Art deems as the hub of South Asian music).

Its not just in Karachi but to date, the Ensemble has performed multiple times in Pakistan and the UK, exploring the soundscapes and the musical emotions of this region. For instance, in May 2017, the ensemble was presented with an audio-visual rendition with a rich and contemporary mix of South Asia’s most significant musical traditions. Taking inspirations from Qawwali, Salt Arts blended the music with new world sounds as composed and produced by Hamza Akram Qawwal and Ahsan Bari Music.

Salt Soiree 32: The elusive monsoon, every year – forever.

Now in 2019, the ensemble is back again with Salt Soiree 32 – the elusive monsoon.

The monsoon line up will feature Ahsan Bari again for vocals, keys and guitars, Lenny Massey, for clarinet, saxophone and also keys, Abdul Aziz Kazi for drums and percussions, Anas Alam khan for bass and also Turab Ali, who will play the melodious sound of Sitar.

The show will also be featuring  Quaid Ahmed, Omran Shafique and Nimra Rafiq, along with Salt Arts resident DJ, Hussain Dossa. The doors for the event will open sharp at 8:30pm and will close at midnight. The evening will also include dinner and a hot/cold drinks bar.

Similarly, on August 29th, Salt Nights is bringing yet another show, now featuring the Lahore-based band that has become a contemporary sensation, SomeWhatSuper (read here, “The unstoppable rise of SomeWhatSuper).

Hitting Patari’s all-time hits charts with its several songs, especially with ‘The Sibbi Song’, the two-man outfit of SomeWhatSuper has made its place in the music industry. It also shared the stage with Atif Aslam at the recently held Geo-Lux Style Awards in Karachi. Along with them, Turhan James, the Canadian DJ and a hot new name in Pakistani music scene, will present the opening act of the night.
