Presenting a modern desi rendition adapted from Shakespeare’s magnum opus, “Romeo and Juliet”, BlankPage Production has crafted a play which has it all; a blend of contemporary romance, notion of hate and betrayal causing turbulence, shifting dynamics of two households, the complexities hitched with pursuing your love and heaps of comical undertones displayed through reflective dialogues, bilingual poetry in Persian and Urdu along with live music and dancing.

BlankPage Production since 2017 has been actively organizing plays which are not merely a source of entertainment but also aim to educate the audience regarding matters of social importance like the #MeToo Movement.   With a different agenda this time, Elsa Sajjad has set the premise of this play which aims to fulfill twofold objectives. First being the introduction of diverse mediums like live singing and dancing incorporated in the performance which celebrates art, theatre and helps in brilliantly conveying the underlying message of unconventional plots. The second is exploring the typical ideology of femininity in our society and ways in which the script challenges the problematic internalized aspect of this concept throughout.

Rahul & Javeria along with many others being put together with sheer commitment and persistent effort, facilitate the resurgence of literary theatrical production within Pakistan, which has been a dire need in the country. Theatre is a sophisticated expression of a basic human need – an instinct to mimic, to project stories onto ourselves and others, and to create meaning through employment of narrative sometimes in the form of satire, which is precisely what Elsa Sajjad, (the director), Maya Razvi and Mubeen Arif (assistant directors) have chosen to explore with this upcoming masterpiece.

The play is based on a setting in Karachi, delineating the melodramatic dynamics of two strong households in the city, the Saadees and the Aahils, which have been at rivalry and have caused multiple casualties over the years. Amidst implacable enmity between the two families, Rahul Aahil (played by Hussain Shah) and Javeria Saadee (played by Alina Salahuddin), make a terrible mistake of falling in love with each other, paving the way for impending grave complications. As the play unfolds in its entirety, there is an apt depiction of how the family feud poses to be a threat to the impassioned love that Rahul & Javeria share.

Though the pair defies to be influenced by the impinging external factors, they reside in a fateful conundrum: is their love strong enough to withstand the inevitable doom or is it going to be crushed under the mounting familial pressure which is coercing them to part ways? Only one way to find out! Grab your tickets through brand ambassadors at various A level schools, at different eateries and locations around Karachi.
