This September, with the change of season, Alliance Française de Karachi (AFK) is coming up with another riveting musical evening featuring Subhan Ahmed Nizami and his troupe. A Qawwali Mehfil in all its splendor will be organized at the Alliance Française De Karachi’s (AFK) premises located at Clifton Karachi.
Subhan Ahmed Nizami is among the most sought after Qawwals. Hailing from the Delhi’s prestigious and renowned “Qawwal Bachon Ka Gharana”. He is from the 32nd generation of an unbroken music dynasty that can be traced as far back as the original Qawwals of Allauddin Khilji’s court around 1276. Their ancestral tree links back to the first ensemble of Qawwals which was formed by the most celebrated poet, music maestro and courtier Amir Khusro. The ensemble of Qawwals were 12 very young boys who were trained in the art of Qawwali by Amir Khusro himself. And as we explore about the historical background, we discover that among those 12 young qawwals was Subhan Ahmed Nizami’s ancestor Samaath Bin Ibrahim.
Later when the family migrated to Pakistan in early 1950s, the Manzoor Niani Qawwali group was formed which included Subhan’s grandfather Iftikhar Ahmed Nizami. The families then later grew into forming 4 different qawwali troupes. Subhan Ahmed’s father, Afaq Ahmed Nizami was a connoisseur in Farsi Kalaam and an exemplary practitioner of classical music. After his father’s demise in 1999, Subhan Ahmed Nizami, just 18 years old then, formed his very own qawwals troupe to continue his forefathers’ legacy.
