Karachi Farmers Market: Local Organic Produce

Written By: Rehan Botejue

Karachi Farmers Market is one of the premier health initiatives currently making a positive impact in the city. In August 28th of 2015, their first market was launched at a farmers house. Since then, they’ve gained considerable traction mostly through word of mouth, with The Lyceum being one of their first recurring locations.

The motivation to start the market had a personal element to it. The children of the owner had health concerns that significantly subsided when he began to grow crops without pesticides and insecticides. Inspired by the remarkable changes, he got together with other interested parties and started the Karachi Farmer’s Market – a health focused movement and ever growing community interested in proliferating and promoting natural products.

The Market brings the producer and consumer in direct contact, without the need for a middle man. All necessary concerns about the products can be voiced to the producer directly. The process of finding individuals to set up their stalls at the market starts with an essential evaluation: the farmer’s crops and farm are probed and scrutinised to see if working conditions are up to standard, if natural growth is emphasised and if pesticides, insecticides or other health detrimental additives to increase yield are being used or not.

Everything for sale is natural. These products help with a variety of general health issues and more specific conditions, including Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, which has been a growing health problem in Pakistan. The Farmer’s Market has two set ups: the original is at Haq Academy in Phase 8, where they organise around 20 stalls from 9am to 1pm, and the newer one is at PECHS, Veritas Learning Center, with around 15 stalls that run from 2PM until 5:30PM.
