“Winter is coming” – that is something we tell ourselves and friends while living in Karachi, as we anticipate a season that just breezes through the start of the year, until next summer comes. But this time around, winter is on full swing. Karachi may have never experienced the joy of all four seasons, but that is about to change and in this season, NJV is bringing an event that will let you have a taste of all four seasons together in one evening. Thanks to the 4-seasons-themed carnival being arranged by NJV school this January, citizens will have a wonderful opportunity to walk through the four seasons in the culturally rich building of the NJV campus built in the heart of Karachi city, at the MA Jinnah Road.
“Why should I go here?” is a question that might be popping in your head as you’re reading this. Let me tell you why this is a ‘must-attend’ deal. First, a carnival of this sort covers all bases to provide an enjoyment filled family day out on a weekend. And second, by attending this carnival, you are helping NJV school and the Akhuwat Foundation (its parent organization) realize their dreams of providing a well rounded and free quality education of its underserved children.
You must be curious about the amazing work that they are already doing. Narayan Jagannath Vaidya (NJV) School , established in 1855, is Sindh’s oldest government school. Housed in a beautiful and historic yellow sandstone building that once hosted the Sindh Assembly, is reminiscent of a vintage architecture, NJV is currently educating 1300 students. The students, who study in grades kindergarten to 12, hail from different cities and villages of Sindh province.
The NJV government school was adopted by the Akhuwat Foundation in 2015, and with their help, is performing a splendid job of providing its students with a holistic and liberal education. A reasonable question here is to ask exactly how does it do that. To begin with, NJV is bridging what has come to become a dilemma in our education system – the disconnect between the school and the “real-world-out-there”. There is a paradox of a skill-less education where schools are not meeting the exact market demands, and where students fail to become well-groomed as they graduate. NJV makes its campus a deliberate attempt to break this bubble, and teaches students how to position themselves in this kind of world.
For this purpose, a 360 degree interactive education, under the “Continuing Education Program” gives students the opportunity to learn a wide array of skills including (but not limited to): pottery, photography, theatre, videography, web development, coding, and others, so they have an open test field to work with.
This carnival on 25th January 2020, will hence also be an opportunity for NJV’s brilliant pupils to showcase, exhibit and/or perform their beautiful works learned through this form of education. NJV’s endeavor also includes providing for sports, industry tours, home economics sessions (including cooking) for all genders and very importantly, mentoring and counselling sessions. Moreover, every morning, there is a home period where students are taught basic hygiene, manners and social behaviour. So, the students are getting full opportunity to hone their potential and be the best versions of themselves in all walks of life.
For Akhuwat to continue providing for these marvellous facilities, there is always a need of generous donations, gifts and contributions, and attending this carnival is one good way to play your part. This carnival therefore, is also a fund-raiser where all the proceeds will go for bettering the facilities. The entry fees of PKR 300, as well as the help from donors and sponsors will help NJV improve its live-in facilities, and build another hostel, since the current has reached its full capacity having accomodated the first two batches.
This event will be NJV’s second Carnival installment. The first carnival was organized in 2018 with the theme “Bandar Road Se Kemari” with a reminiscent celebration of old-city Karachi. Desi, finger-licking food, as well as memorable cultural plays and dances from the townships of Lyari, Kemari, Empress Market and others, gave the cultural experience of a multi-ethnic, multicultural city that Karachi is known for. NJV’s students were prime contributors in marking the success of this fun-filled experience.
This time around, the plan is only getting grander. With a vibe of four colorful seasons appropriated in context of the city, this carnival will offer activities comprising of games, food, arts and craft, visual reality gaming zone, stage performances, rides, interactive activities and much more.
